Drug death prompts calls for public education revamp

The Alcohol and Drug Foundation of Queensland (ADFQ) says an ongoing public education campaign is needed to teach people about the dangers of illicit drugs.

Police made an urgent public appeal yesterday after the drug-related death of a 28-year-old woman in Brisbane and a spate of overdoses on the Sunshine Coast in the past week.

ADFQ spokesman David Warby says a new approach is needed.

"I think there needs to be a lot more public education - what we're doing at the moment isn't working, drug use is on the increase and it's starting at a younger age all the time," he said.

The ADFQ believes warning about the dangers of illicit drugs will not stop people using them.

"Taking drugs is a part of our culture, it's really embedded in our society these days," Mr Warby said.

"There needs to be an ongoing campaign - it needs to be a campaign of education, making the general public more aware of some of the risks associated with taking the types of things they're taking."
